What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

Is your purchase not quite what you expected or is the size incorrect? No problem, you can easily return your order to us. You may try on and view an item as you would in a shop, but there are some rules.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

This is usually within a few days after your order has been delivered to us. The money will then be refunded to the account you paid with within a week after confirmation (usually longer for credit card payments). If you have chosen to pay afterwards, this will be adjusted on your Klarna invoice.

Please note! If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

Product information
  • 40 g/m2 Coreloft Stretch body, 280 g total
  • Octa fleece panels and mesh sleeves vent fast
  • Packs into its own hood, no stuff sack needed
  • DWR finish only, not waterproof in steady rain
  • Sleeves and hood uninsulated: cold when static
  • SL build favours low weight over abrasion life

The Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody is a 280 g synthetic-insulated hooded mid layer for men, built for high-output hiking and alpine days in cold or changeable weather. Coreloft™ Stretch insulation sits in the body only at 40 g/m², while the sleeves are uninsulated and mesh-lined and the side panels are Octa® fleece, so the jacket dumps heat on the climb instead of trapping it. It packs into its own hood and is held shut with the hood cinch.

Who is the Atom SL Hoody for?

This is a layer for an active hiker, alpinist or ski tourer who runs warm, wants insulation that vents, and already owns a waterproof shell for real weather. The Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody is not the right choice if you want one jacket for standing still in deep cold, because the arms and head have no insulation at all. It is also not built for sustained rain, or for abrasion-heavy use such as scrambling against rock with a loaded pack — the SL construction prioritises low weight and packability.

How warm and how weather-resistant is the Atom SL Hoody?

Warmth comes from 40 g/m² Coreloft™ Stretch in the torso, which is the lighter end of synthetic insulation and is tuned for moving. The 58 gsm Fortius™ Air 20 face fabric carries an FC0 DWR finish, free from intentionally added PFAS, which sheds drizzle and mist and blunts the wind. It is not a waterproof garment: for prolonged rain, put a hardshell over it. The 122 gsm Octa® fleece side panels are air-permeable, so in strong wind you will feel some through-flow.

Which size should you choose in the Atom SL Hoody?

Arc'teryx cuts the Atom SL Hoody in its Fitted shape: close through chest, waist and hip, and marginally slimmer than the standard Atom Hoody. Size M measures 113.4 cm chest width, 106.0 cm waist width, 92.8 cm sleeve and 72 cm centre back length; the brand's 180 cm fit model wears M. Plan for a base layer or thin first layer underneath, not a thick fleece. Compare your own chest and sleeve measurements with the size chart on this page before ordering. Available in S, M, L and XL.

How is the Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody built?

The Arc'teryx Atom SL Hoody uses three different materials in three different places, and that mapping is the whole idea. The torso holds Coreloft™ Stretch synthetic insulation at 40 g/m², made with recycled content, between a 58 gsm Fortius™ Air 20 plain-weave face fabric and a 58 gsm recycled 20d nylon lining. Both of those fabrics are 88% nylon and 12% elastane, so the jacket moves with you rather than resisting you. The side panels swap insulation for 122 gsm Octa® polyester fleece with a 40D Delta face, which breathes under a pack strap and a harness. The sleeves are left uninsulated with a mesh lining, and the adjustable low-profile StormHood™ is lined but uninsulated. Total weight is 280 g.

Is the Atom SL Hoody suitable for ski touring and alpine days?

Yes, as the warm layer in a layering system rather than as the outer shell. On a skin track or a cold approach the Atom SL Hoody runs warm enough to start in and breathable enough to keep on, with the Octa® panels and mesh-lined sleeves doing the venting. The 72 cm centre back length in size M sits under a hardshell without bunching, and the hem draw cord pulls in to stop updraught. Where it stops is clear: there is no powder skirt, no pass pocket and no lift-queue warmth, because 40 g/m² in the body only is a moving-layer specification. For a long, cold chairlift day or a storm, this belongs under a waterproof jacket, not on top. It is also not a replacement for an uninsulated windshirt.

What is the Atom SL Hoody made of and how do you wash it?

The shell, lining and contrast panels are nylon, elastane and polyester, all made with recycled content, and the Coreloft™ Stretch fill is 100% polyester. Both shell and lining carry an FC0 DWR finish that contains no intentionally added PFAS. Wash on a gentle machine cycle at low temperature, keep dark colours separate, rinse twice and skip the fabric softener, which clogs the fibres the DWR needs. Tumble dry gentle and low — heat helps restore the water-repellent finish — and never iron, bleach, wring or dry clean the garment. A Polygiene anti-odour treatment keeps the jacket fresher between washes, which matters on multi-day trips. Note that the lightweight Octa® side and underarm fabric is thin by design and can be punctured by a hard point such as an outer-shell zipper pull.

What makes the Atom SL Hoody more sustainable?

Shell, lining, contrast fleece and insulation are all made with recycled content, and the shell and lining are listed as bluepass materials produced through processes meeting bluesign® criteria. The DWR is PFAS compliant, with no intentionally added PFAS. The jacket is sewn in a Fair Trade Certified™ facility in Bangladesh, with fabric and dyeing in Taiwan and China. Like all synthetic garments, it can release plastic microfibres when washed, so wash it only when it needs it.
