What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 375 g three-layer GORE-TEX ePE hardshell
- 80d face fabric at 126 gsm, FC0 DWR finish
- StormHood, RECCO reflector, dual hem adjusters
- No insulation: warmth depends on your layers
- No pit zips for high-output days
- No powder skirt or pass pocket for deep snow
The Arc'teryx Beta Jacket is a men's uninsulated three-layer hardshell built on a GORE-TEX ePE membrane with a C-KNIT backer, weighing 375 grams. It is made for hiking and general mountain use in wet, windy weather, and works equally well as a travel rain shell or as a ski shell over your own insulating layers. The detail that defines it is the 80d face fabric at 126 gsm with an FC0 DWR finish: a substantial weave rather than a minimum-weight one.
Who is the Arc'teryx Beta Jacket for?
This jacket suits someone who wants one durable waterproof shell for hill walking, wet-weather travel and the occasional resort or touring day, and who is happy to choose their own warmth underneath. It is not a winter jacket on its own: there is no insulation at all. It is also not a dedicated freeride jacket, because the Beta Jacket has no powder skirt, no pass pocket and no wrist gaiters.
How much protection does the GORE-TEX ePE membrane give?
Three layers are bonded into one fabric: the 80d nylon face, the GORE-TEX ePE membrane with PU, and the C-KNIT nylon backer that sits against your midlayer. That construction blocks wind and rain while still moving moisture outward. There are no underarm zips, so on warm, high-output climbs you regulate with the front zip and your layers instead.
Which size should you choose in the Beta Jacket?
Arc'teryx cuts the Beta Jacket in a regular fit, comfortable through chest, waist, hip and thigh, with articulated patterning at the elbows. Size M measures 77 cm centre back. Check your chest measurement against the men's tops size chart on this page; sleeves run generously long.
How is the Arc'teryx Beta Jacket constructed?
The Arc'teryx Beta Jacket is a three-layer laminate, not a shell with a loose liner. The outer face is an 80d nylon weave at 126 gsm treated with an FC0 DWR finish, the middle layer is the GORE-TEX ePE membrane with PU, and the inner layer is a C-KNIT nylon backer laminated directly to the membrane. Because the backer is bonded rather than hung, the jacket keeps a thin profile over a midlayer and there is no inner fabric to cling when you pull it on over a damp base layer. The front closure is a WaterTight Vislon zip with a chin guard, the StormHood adjusts with a single pull, and dual adjusters at the hem seal the jacket down over a harness or hip belt. A RECCO reflector is built in.
Is the Arc'teryx Beta Jacket suitable for skiing and ski touring?
For resort skiing and ski touring, the Beta Jacket works as a protective outer layer worn over insulation you select yourself, and its 375 grams make it easy to stow in a pack on the way up. Where it stops is clear: no powder skirt, no lift pass pocket, no wrist gaiters, and a pocket set limited to two hand pockets plus one internal laminated zip pocket. On deep-snow freeride days with repeated falls, a jacket with a powder skirt is the better tool. Its home ground is hiking and mountain travel in sustained rain and wind, where the heavier face fabric earns its weight.
What is the Beta Jacket made of and how do you care for it?
Body and contrast panels are 100% nylon with the ePE and PU membrane, with a 100% nylon backing on the contrast fabric. Arc'teryx describes the nylon face as bio-based, made with fibres derived from plants. Machine wash the Beta Jacket on medium, on its own, with all fastenings closed and no fabric softener, then double rinse. Tumble drying on medium heat reactivates the DWR, which matters here: ePE face fabrics can wet out somewhat faster, and a wash-and-dry cycle restores the water repellency of the surface while the membrane itself stays waterproof. Do not iron, bleach or dry clean, and take the jacket out of the machine instead of leaving it wet.
What makes this hardshell a more responsible choice?
The GORE-TEX ePE membrane in the Beta Jacket is free from intentionally added PFAS, and the jacket is PFAS compliant. It contains recycled content and materials produced through processes that meet bluesign criteria, and the fabric is dope dyed. Sewing is done in a Fair Trade Certified facility, PT. Pancaprima Ekabrothers in Indonesia; fabric and dyeing take place in China.
