What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 340 g three-layer GORE-TEX ePE, packs small
- Helmet-compatible StormHood plus pit zips
- PFAS-compliant ePE membrane, FC0-DWR finish
- No insulation: warmth comes from your midlayer
- Fitted cut leaves room for light layers only
- SL build favours low weight over durability
The Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket is a 340 g three-layer GORE-TEX ePE hardshell for men, built for hiking and general mountain use in rain, wet snow and wind. It has no insulation of any kind: this is a pure weather shell that packs small and stays in the rucksack year-round. The ePE membrane is free from intentionally added PFAS and sits behind a recycled nylon face fabric made in part with plant-derived fibres.
Who is the Beta SL Jacket for?
This Arc'teryx shell jacket suits the hiker or mountain traveller who wants one fully waterproof, light and packable GORE-TEX layer to carry all year, and who is happy to add warmth underneath rather than buy an insulated jacket. It is not a standalone warm jacket. It is also not built for deep-snow resort and freeride days: there is no powder skirt, no ski-pass pocket and no thigh vents. Climbers who want to pass a harness through a two-way front zip should look elsewhere, because the Beta SL has a single-direction full front zip.
How much weather protection does it give?
Protection comes from a three-layer GORE-TEX ePE laminate with GORE C-KNIT backer, built on a 40dx70d plain-weave recycled nylon face with an FC0-DWR finish. Pit zips dump heat on climbs, and a helmet-compatible StormHood keeps rain off when you are wearing a lid. The lightweight face fabric can wet out in long periods of hard rain once the DWR fades, so the finish needs periodic re-treatment; a tumble dry on medium after washing reactivates it.
Which size should you choose?
Arc'teryx patterns the Beta SL Jacket in a Fitted cut: close through chest, waist, hip and thigh, with a low profile over first layers. Centre back length is 75 cm in size M. Here it is stocked in M, L and XL. Check your chest measurement against the size chart on this page, and if you plan to wear a thick insulated midlayer underneath, take one size up.
What does the three-layer GORE-TEX ePE construction do?
The Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket uses a three-layer laminate: a plain-weave recycled nylon face, the GORE-TEX ePE membrane in the middle, and a GORE C-KNIT backer bonded to the inside. The C-KNIT backer is a fine knit rather than a loose liner, which is why the jacket has no separate lining and still feels smooth over a base layer or a fleece. The ePE membrane is a PFAS-compliant polyethylene film, laminated to a nylon face partly made from plant-derived fibres. The whole jacket weighs 340 g and compresses into a pack.
Is the Beta SL Jacket suitable for ski touring?
Yes, as the outer layer of a layered system. The helmet-compatible StormHood works over a ski or climbing helmet, the pit zips handle the heat of a long skin track, and a RECCO reflector is built in. Because the Beta SL Jacket is uninsulated, your warmth on a tour comes entirely from what you put underneath, for example a synthetic insulated hoody. Where this Arc'teryx hardshell stops is the lift-served deep-snow day: the snowsport feature set is limited to the RECCO reflector, and the SL construction is deliberately light rather than abrasion-resistant, so repeated rubbing from a loaded pack, rock or ski edges will wear the 40dx70d face fabric faster than a heavier shell. Pocketing is modest too: two zippered hand pockets and one internal chest pocket.
What is it made of and how do you care for it?
Body and contrast panels are both 40dx70d three-layer GORE-TEX ePE, 100% nylon with an ePE and PU membrane, finished with FC0-DWR. The backer is dope dyed. Fabric is woven and dyed in China, and the jacket is sewn in a Fair Trade Certified facility in Bangladesh. Wash it on a medium machine cycle, on its own, with all zips and cuff closures shut, and run a double rinse. Skip fabric softener and bleach, both of which clog the membrane. Tumble dry on medium; do not leave the jacket sitting wet, do not iron it and do not dry clean it.
How sustainable is this jacket?
The Beta SL Jacket is built around a GORE-TEX ePE membrane free from intentionally added PFAS, with an FC0-DWR, PFC-free water-repellent finish. The face fabric is recycled nylon, and the jacket contains materials produced through processes that meet bluesign criteria. Arc'teryx states that this GORE-TEX fabric carries a reduced carbon footprint and a long product life. As with any synthetic garment, washing can release plastic microfibres, so wash it only when it needs it.
