What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

The Arc'teryx Beta SV Jacket is a men's uninsulated three-layer GORE-TEX PRO hardshell built for severe, prolonged mountain weather. SV means severe weather: this is the heavy-duty end of the Beta family, made for alpine climbing and high-alpine days in driving snow, wind and heavy rain rather than for low weight. A two-way front zipper, a helmet-compatible StormHood and hand pockets positioned to clear a harness make it a climbing shell first and a general-purpose rain jacket second.

Who is the Beta SV Jacket for?

The Arc'teryx Beta SV Jacket suits mountaineers, alpine climbers and alpine hikers who want one durable waterproof shell for long exposed days and who already own the insulating layers to wear beneath it. It also serves as a protective outer layer on ski tours and freeride days. It is not a resort-specific ski jacket: there is no powder skirt and no sleeve pocket for a lift pass, and Arc'teryx point skiers who want those features to the Sabre. For low-output daily town wear, a lighter shell is the more comfortable choice.

How much weather protection does it give?

Protection comes from a three-layer GORE-TEX PRO construction with a MICRO-GRID backer, which carries the waterproof, windproof membrane and resists abrasion from packs and harnesses on the inside. WaterTight external zippers, Velcro cuff closures and dual hem cinches close the garment down in wind, and pit zippers dump heat on the climb. The face is treated with an FC0 DWR finish that is free from intentionally added PFAS. The jacket is uninsulated, so all warmth comes from what you wear underneath.

Which size should you choose?

Arc'teryx cut the Beta SV Jacket in a Regular fit, roomy through chest, waist, hip and thigh so it goes over a hooded midlayer. In practice it runs large and long: several customers chose one size below their usual, and the sleeves are cut long enough to cover gloves, which the Velcro cuffs take up. If you plan to wear a thick insulated parka underneath, stay in your usual size. The webshop stocks M, L and XL.

How is the Arc'teryx Beta SV Jacket built?

The Arc'teryx Beta SV Jacket is a three-layer construction: face fabric, GORE-TEX PRO membrane and a MICRO-GRID backer bonded into one laminate. There is no separate hanging lining, so the jacket moves as a single piece and there is no inner fabric to soak up moisture. The grid backer handles two jobs at once - it keeps the membrane breathing and it takes the rubbing from a pack, a harness and the layers underneath. Around that core sit the details that define the SV build: WaterTight external zippers, a helmet-compatible StormHood, Velcro cuff closures and dual hem cinches that seal out drafts and let you adjust the length.

Is the Beta SV Jacket right for climbing and ski touring?

Climbing is where this hardshell was aimed. The two-way front zipper of the Arc'teryx Beta SV Jacket opens from the hem so you can reach a belay device, a harness loop or a pack hip belt without unzipping the chest, and the hand pockets sit high enough to stay usable with a harness on. Add a zippered chest pocket, an internal zippered chest pocket and an internal dump pocket for skins, gloves or a hat. On a ski tour it works as the shell you pull on at the top, with pit zippers for the way up. On resort days it protects, but it does not replace a dedicated ski jacket: no powder skirt, no sleeve pass pocket, and the severe-weather build is heavier and bulkier than the lighter Beta variants. Arc'teryx also state that none of their jackets are designed or certified for motorcycle use.

How do you wash and care for it?

Washing the Arc'teryx Beta SV Jacket regularly is part of keeping it waterproof, because dirt on the face fabric is what makes a DWR finish fail first. Machine wash it on medium, on its own, with all fastenings closed and no fabric softener. Run a double rinse so no detergent stays in the laminate, then tumble dry on normal medium - the heat revives the FC0 DWR finish. Do not bleach, do not iron and do not dry clean. Remove the jacket from the machine as soon as the cycle ends rather than leaving it wet.

What are the sustainability credentials?

The Beta SV Jacket is sewn in a Fair Trade Certified facility and contains materials produced through processes that meet bluesign criteria. The shell carries recycled content and is dope dyed, and the FC0 DWR finish is free from intentionally added PFAS. Arc'teryx note that the fabric can release plastic microfibres into the environment when washed, which is another reason to wash it only when it needs it.
