More informationWhat Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- Down Composite Mapping: Coreloft in damp zones
- Packs into its own included stuff sack
- Insulated, adjustable StormHood
- No waterproof membrane: wear a shell in rain
- Fitted cut: little room for a thick midlayer
- SL fabric trades durability for low weight
The Arc'teryx Cerium SL Hoody is an ultralight hooded down jacket for men, built as a warmth layer for low-output alpine use: belay stops, summit breaks, camp and cool-weather hikes. It combines grey goose down through the body, arms and hood with Coreloft synthetic insulation in the zones where moisture builds up, an approach Arc'teryx calls Down Composite Mapping, and it compresses into its own stuff sack.
Who is the Cerium SL Hoody for?
The Cerium SL Hoody suits an alpinist, climber or hiker who wants the smallest packable down hoody to pull on when the movement stops. It is not a ski jacket for lift-served days: no powder skirt, pass pocket or RECCO reflector is part of this down jacket. It is also the wrong choice for sustained uphill effort, where a wind shell over a synthetic midlayer vents better, and for work that drags across rock, ice tools, ski edges or a heavily loaded pack.
How warm is the Arc'teryx Cerium SL Hoody?
Within the Cerium family, the SL is the lightest insulation level, with the standard Cerium Hoody positioned as the warmer option. Grey goose down does the work in the dry areas; Coreloft keeps loft in the damp ones, since down flattens once it takes on moisture. The DWR finish, free from intentionally added PFAS, sheds light snow and brief drizzle, but there is no waterproof membrane here, so in steady rain or wet snow this belongs under a hardshell.
Which size should you choose in the Cerium SL Hoody?
Arc'teryx cuts this hoody Fitted: close through chest, waist and hip, patterned to sit over a base layer or under a shell rather than over a thick fleece. Stocked in M, L and XL. Check the Arc'teryx men's tops chart before you order, and size up if you want a midlayer underneath.
How is the Arc'teryx Cerium SL Hoody constructed?
The Arc'teryx Cerium SL Hoody is a zone-mapped down jacket. Grey goose down fills the body, arms and hood, while Coreloft synthetic insulation takes over in the areas where moisture collects, because synthetic fill keeps loft when damp and down does not. The baffles are sewn through rather than boxed: the stitch lines pass straight through the insulation, which saves weight and limits down shift, and it is one of the reasons this hoody compresses so small. A DWR finish on the outside, free from intentionally added PFAS, handles light moisture. The SL designation is Arc'teryx shorthand for superlight materials chosen for weight and packability ahead of abrasion resistance.
Is the Cerium SL Hoody suitable for alpine climbing and hiking?
This is a stop-and-start jacket. Carried compressed in its stuff sack, the Cerium SL Hoody comes out at a belay, on a summit, at a cold camp or at a viewpoint on a chilly hike, then goes back in the pack. The stuff sack is supplied attached inside the internal chest pocket and can be removed via its loop. The insulated, adjustable StormHood, hem draw cord and stretch-knit cuffs close off draughts, and the articulated sleeve patterning keeps the hem in place when you reach up. Where it stops is clear enough: it is not built for deep mid-winter cold worn on its own, not for sustained aerobic output, and not for use as the outer layer when precipitation keeps coming.
How do you wash and care for a down hoody like this?
Down needs a gentler routine than a shell. Machine wash the Cerium SL Hoody on a gentle, low-temperature cycle, ideally in a front-load machine; in a top loader, use a mesh bag. Rinse twice so no detergent stays behind in the fill, wash dark colours separately, and skip fabric softener and bleach. Tumble dry gentle and low, with a few tennis balls in the drum to break up clumps and bring the loft back. Do not dry clean and do not iron. The lightweight face fabric also deserves a little care in use, since the superlight construction is more vulnerable than a standard-weight shell.
What are the sustainability credentials of the Cerium SL Hoody?
The down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) by IDFL under certificate No. TE-99950273. The water-repellent finish is PFAS compliant, with no intentionally added PFAS. The jacket is made with bluesign approved materials and is Fair Trade Certified, and the shell, padding and lining are listed as bluepass materials with recycled content. As with any synthetic textile, washing can release plastic microfibres, so wash it only when it needs it. This article is offered in Black.
