What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • Air-permeable double weave with stretch
  • Brushed inner face, comfortable over a base layer
  • Outer layer or mid layer under a hardshell
  • No membrane: wets out in sustained rain
  • No pit zips, front zipper is the only venting
  • Runs large with long sleeves; consider sizing down

The Arc'teryx Gamma Jacket is a men's softshell jacket in an air-permeable double-weave fabric with stretch, built for hiking, scrambling and climbing in dry, windy or showery mountain weather. It is wind-resistant and water-repellent rather than waterproof, so it serves as an outer layer when the weather is changeable and as a breathable mid layer under a hardshell when it is not. A brushed inner face adds a little warmth and makes the fabric comfortable worn close to the skin.

Who is the Arc'teryx Gamma Jacket for?

This is the layer for a hiker or climber who wants one stretchy, breathable, wind-resistant jacket that moves freely on the approach and still looks clean in town, and who carries a separate waterproof shell for real rain. It is not the right choice as your only outer layer in storm conditions on a resort or in high alpine terrain, and it is not built for avalanche terrain: no powder skirt, pass pocket or RECCO reflector is documented on this style.

How weather resistant is the Gamma Jacket?

The Arc'teryx Gamma Jacket uses a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish on a double-weave face fabric. There is no waterproof membrane and no taped seams, so it sheds wind, drizzle and short showers and will wet out in sustained rain or wet snow. Venting runs through the No Slip Zip front zipper only; there are no pit zips, and the brushed backer makes it feel warm during high-output efforts such as running or nordic skiing in mild weather.

Which size should you choose?

Arc'teryx cuts the Gamma Jacket as a regular fit: comfortable through chest, waist and hip. Customer feedback consistently describes the cut as generous and the sleeves as long, so size down for a trimmer silhouette and stay with your usual size if you plan to layer a thick midlayer underneath. Measure your chest and waist against the Arc'teryx men's tops chart on this page. Offered here in M, L and XL.

How is the Arc'teryx Gamma Jacket constructed?

The Arc'teryx Gamma Jacket is a double-weave softshell: one fabric, woven so that the outer face takes the wind and abrasion while the brushed inner face sits soft against a base layer. The weave is air-permeable, which is the trade-off the Gamma line is built around — you lose the sealed protection of a membrane and gain continuous airflow and stretch. There is no insulation in the jacket; the warmth you feel comes from the brushed backer and from whatever you wear underneath. Articulated patterning keeps the sleeves and shoulders free when you reach overhead, and a No Slip Zip runs up the front.

Is the Arc'teryx Gamma Jacket suitable for hiking and climbing?

Hiking and mountain walking in dry to showery, windy conditions is what this softshell jacket does best, with rock climbing and bouldering close behind: the stretch fabric and articulated cut follow a high step and a long reach, and two zippered hand pockets plus two chest pockets keep small items reachable under a pack belt or a harness. Shaped cuffs with partial elastic seal around gloves or wrists, and an adjustable hem draw cord stops updraught on a windy ridge. Where the Gamma Jacket stops is honest and clear: prolonged rain, wet snow, and resort or high alpine days where you need a waterproof shell over the top.

Can you wear the Gamma Jacket as a mid layer?

Yes — the Gamma Jacket is designed to work in both directions. Over a merino or synthetic base layer it is a complete outer layer for dry, breezy weather. Under a waterproof hardshell it becomes a stretchy, breathable mid layer that adds wind protection and a touch of warmth without bulk. Because the jacket carries no insulation, cold static days need a warmer layer underneath rather than a bigger size of this one.

How do you care for the Arc'teryx Gamma Jacket?

Machine wash the Gamma Jacket on a low temperature and run a double rinse so no detergent stays in the weave. Skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and works against the DWR finish, and skip bleach and dry cleaning entirely. Tumble dry on low. Wash dark colourways such as Black and Nightscape separately from lighter garments. If you press the jacket, use a low iron setting at most. Like other synthetic fabrics, this one can release plastic microfibres into the water when washed, so wash it only when it is actually dirty.
