What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • 195 g in 125 gsm air-permeable softshell
  • Zippered thigh pocket stays clear of a harness
  • UPF 50+ fabric, FC0 DWR without added PFAS
  • Water repellent only: no membrane, wets out
  • No rear pocket for a wallet
  • SL build favours low weight over durability

The Arc'teryx Gamma SL Short 9" is a 195 g men's softshell short for warm-weather hiking, rock climbing and bouldering. Its 125 gsm Fortius™ DW 1.0 double weave is air-permeable and water repellent rather than waterproof, and that trade-off is the whole point: very little fabric, very little weight, a lot of airflow. A 24 cm (9") inseam at size 32, articulated leg patterning and a gusseted crotch keep it clear of high steps and long approaches.

Who is the Gamma SL Short 9" for?

This is a short for hikers and climbers who move in heat and want the least fabric possible between them and the air, and who accept light rain and wind protection instead of real weather protection. The zippered thigh pocket is shaped to stay reachable under a harness, which makes the Gamma SL Short 9" usable on rock and at the boulder. It is not a ski, ski touring or freeride garment, not a cold-weather layer, and not the right choice if you need stitched pockets or a rear pocket for your wallet.

How much weather protection does the Gamma SL Short 9" give you?

The Arc'teryx Gamma SL Short 9" has no membrane. An FC0 DWR finish, free from intentionally added PFAS, sheds light rain and keeps the 125 gsm face fabric from soaking through quickly, and the tight woven double weave takes the edge off wind. In sustained or heavy rain the fabric will wet out. The fabric is rated UPF 50+ and tested to EN 13758-2, AS4399:2020 and GB/T 18830-2009; only covered skin is protected, and protection drops when the fabric is stretched or wet.

Which size should you choose?

The Gamma SL Short 9" has a regular fit, cut comfortably through waist, hip and thigh, and reviewers report it runs true to size — order the size you normally wear. Arc'teryx men's bottoms use numeric waist sizing; brand support places S at numeric 29. Four-way stretch and the adjustable integrated webbing belt absorb small differences. Measure your waist and hip and compare them with the bottoms size chart on this page before ordering.

How is the Arc'teryx Gamma SL Short 9" built?

One fabric does all the work. The body of the Arc'teryx Gamma SL Short 9" is a recycled Fortius™ DW 1.0 woven double weave at 125 gsm, blending 86% nylon with 14% elastane for four-way stretch. It is air-permeable, so moist air moves out through the weave itself rather than through a membrane. The SL designation marks Arc'teryx's superlight construction line, which prioritises low weight and packability over durability — at 195 g this short is deliberately thin, and it is not the garment to choose for repeated hard abrasion against rock or scree. The pockets are bonded rather than stitched, an intentional construction choice that keeps bulk and weight down.

Is the Gamma SL Short 9" good for hiking and climbing?

Warm-weather hiking is the primary job. Articulated patterning through the legs and a gusseted crotch let the Gamma SL Short 9" follow a high step without pulling at the waist, and the 24 cm (9") inseam at size 32 — inseam changes with size — keeps the hem above the knee on long ascents. On rock and at the boulder, the zippered thigh pocket sits where a harness does not block it, and the integrated webbing belt with metal buckle replaces a separate belt under a harness waistbelt. Two zippered hand pockets hold the small items; there is no rear pocket, so plan on carrying your wallet elsewhere. Where the Gamma SL Short stops is clear: this is a summer short with no insulation and no lining, so it has no place in cold conditions or on snow.

What is the fabric made of and how do you wash it?

The body is 86% nylon and 14% elastane in a 125 gsm Fortius™ DW 1.0 double weave, made in Vietnam. Nylon carries the abrasion resistance, elastane carries the recovery, and the smooth outer face keeps the DWR working. Machine wash the Gamma SL Short 9" on a low setting, wash dark colours separately and double rinse, since detergent residue is what dulls a DWR finish fastest. Skip fabric softener and bleach entirely, and do not dry clean. Tumble drying on normal, low heat is fine, and low-heat ironing is allowed. Heat helps revive the water repellency once the fabric starts wetting out sooner than it used to.

How sustainable is the Gamma SL Short 9"?

The body fabric of the Arc'teryx Gamma SL Short 9" is a recycled Fortius™ 1.0 double weave, and body and lining materials are produced through processes meeting bluesign® criteria. The FC0 DWR finish is free from intentionally added PFAS, and the short is sewn in a Fair Trade Certified™ facility. Arc'teryx also discloses that the fabric can release plastic microfibres into the environment during washing, which is one more reason to wash it only when it needs it.
