What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW
- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
- Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 248 gsm Polartec Power Stretch Pro, 4-way stretch
- 284 g and low profile: layers flat under a shell
- Fitted cut runs true to size in S, M and L
- No membrane or DWR: not for rain or wet snow
- Air permeable, needs a wind shell when exposed
- Owners report pilling of the face fabric
The Arc'teryx Kyanite Jacket Women's is a fitted stretch fleece mid layer made from a single layer of Polartec® Power Stretch® Pro at 248 gsm, with a durable nylon face and a brushed polyester interior containing recycled content. It weighs 284 grams and is built to sit flat under a ski or alpine shell while moving, for hiking, rock climbing, bouldering and skiing. The difference is the construction: four-way stretch fleece with articulated patterning, no insulation and no membrane, so air moves straight through it.
Who is the Kyanite Jacket Women's for?
This fleece suits a woman who wants one close-fitting technical mid layer for low-to-medium-output mountain days: climbing and bouldering, hiking, and skiing under a shell. It is not an outer layer for rain or wet snow, and it is not insulated outerwear for standing at a lift in the cold. If you want a hood, a hem drawcord or room for a thick layer underneath, choose a different model.
How warm and how breathable is the Arc'teryx Kyanite fleece?
At 248 gsm this is a mid-weight fleece, warm enough on the move over a base layer and highly air permeable rather than protective. Arc'teryx publishes no temperature rating for the Kyanite Jacket Women's. Because the fabric lets air through, you will want a wind shell or hardshell over it on exposed, windy ground; in shelter it works on its own.
Which size should you choose?
The Arc'teryx Kyanite Jacket Women's has a Fitted cut, patterned close through chest, waist, hip and thigh so it layers under a shell without bunching. It runs true to size, so order your usual size. Centre back length in size S is 60 cm. The jacket is offered in S, M and L; size up only if you plan to wear a thicker layer beneath it.
How is the Arc'teryx Kyanite Jacket Women's constructed?
The Kyanite Jacket Women's is a single-layer garment: one 248 gsm Polartec® Power Stretch® Pro fabric does all the work. The nylon face takes the abrasion from a pack or a harness, while the brushed polyester interior sits against a base layer and moves moisture outwards. Four-way stretch is combined with articulated patterning and raglan sleeves, so the shoulders rotate freely when you reach overhead. Merrow and flatlock seams keep the seam profile low where a shell or a pack strap presses on it, and the cuffs and hem are bound with Tanica™ stretch fabric rather than elasticated or adjustable closures.
Is the Kyanite suitable for climbing, hiking and skiing?
Arc'teryx builds this fleece for rock climbing, bouldering and hiking, and it works equally well as a mid layer under a ski or alpine shell. Two hand pockets with laminated zippers stay usable under a harness belt, and an internal mesh key pocket holds small items. On a touring climb or a hike it vents constantly, which is the point of an air-permeable fleece. Where it stops is weather: there is no membrane, no waterproof rating and no water-repellent finish, so rain and wet snow need a shell over the top. Wind does too. As a standalone outer layer it belongs to dry, sheltered or low-wind conditions.
What is the Kyanite made of, and how do you wash it?
The body is Polartec® Power Stretch® Pro at 248 gsm: 53% polyester, 38% nylon and 9% elastane. The elastane gives the recovery that keeps the Fitted cut from going slack, and the nylon content is what makes the face side more durable than a plain fleece surface. Worth knowing before you buy: owners of the Arc'teryx Kyanite Jacket Women's report pilling of the face fabric after limited wear, and Arc'teryx treats pilling as normal behaviour for this fabric rather than a fault. If surface appearance over time matters to you, factor that in. Machine wash on low, line dry, and skip fabric softener, bleach, ironing and dry cleaning. Wash dark colourways such as Black separately.
How sustainable is this fleece?
The body fabric contains recycled content and the Kyanite Jacket Women's is PFAS compliant. The style carries Fair Trade Certified sewing, and the current revision is designed to facilitate repair, so a worn cuff or a damaged panel is a repair case rather than a write-off. The fabric and dyeing are done in the United States and the garment is manufactured in El Salvador. Like other synthetic fleeces, it can release plastic microfibres when washed, so wash it only when it needs it.
