What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 45 g, 138 gsm softshell with PFAS-free DWR
- Low crown: fits under a climbing helmet
- Spacer mesh sweatband and adjustable buckle
- Surface clean only - no machine washing
- No UPF rating, so no rated sun protection
- Lightly structured brim creases if folded
The Arc'teryx Gamma 5 Panel Cap is a 45 g unisex softshell cap for warm-weather mountain days: hiking, rock climbing and bouldering. The body is Aequora AirPermâ„¢, a 138 gsm recycled nylon/elastane stretch weave with an FC0 DWR finish that is free from intentionally added PFAS. What sets it apart is the combination of stretch softshell fabric and a low-profile five-panel shape that still fits under a climbing helmet.
Who is the Gamma 5 Panel Cap for?
The Gamma 5 Panel Cap suits hikers, boulderers and rock climbers who want a light, stretchy cap for sunny days and passing showers, and who accept surface-clean-only care. It is not a ski or winter cap: there is no insulation and the fabric is deliberately air permeable, so it does nothing for warmth under a ski helmet. Arc'teryx also points high-output trail runners in hot weather towards a lighter, faster-drying cap.
How much weather protection does the Gamma 5 Panel Cap give?
Protection comes from the fabric itself, not from a membrane. The 138 gsm plain weave carries an FC0 DWR water-repellent finish, which sheds a short shower and dries quickly, and it wets out in sustained rain or snow. The cap is not UPF rated, so it gives shade rather than a guaranteed level of sun protection. A spacer mesh sweatband keeps the inside off your forehead on hot climbs.
Which size should you choose?
The Gamma 5 Panel Cap comes in two sizes, S-M and L-XL, with an adjustable buckle closure at the back for fine-tuning. Measure your head circumference and compare it with the Arc'teryx hat sizing chart on this page before ordering. The crown sits low and close, which is why it works under a climbing helmet; if you want a tall, structured trucker shape, this is not that cap.
How is the Arc'teryx Gamma 5 Panel Cap built?
The Arc'teryx Gamma 5 Panel Cap uses a five-panel construction in a single material: Aequora AirPermâ„¢, a stretch plain weave of 86% nylon and 14% elastane at 138 gsm. The elastane content lets the panels follow the shape of your head instead of sitting rigid on it, and the air-permeable weave moves warm air out while you climb or walk uphill. Inside, a spacer mesh sweatband separates the fabric from your forehead. An adjustable buckle at the back sets the circumference, and the Arc'teryx bird logo sits centre front. Total weight is 45 g, so the cap disappears into a hip pocket or the lid of a pack.
Is the Gamma 5 Panel Cap suitable for climbing and hiking?
Yes - rock, boulder and hike are exactly what the Gamma 5 Panel Cap was built for. On a summer approach it handles sun, sweat and a short burst of rain; the DWR finish keeps the first minutes of a shower off your head and the fabric dries fast afterwards. The low crown means you can keep it on under a climbing helmet rather than stuffing it away at the base of the route. It stops where the weather turns serious: sustained rain or snow soaks through, there is no insulation for cold days, and no windproof claim is made because the weave is intentionally air permeable. For freeriding, ski touring in winter or high alpine cold, choose insulated headwear instead.
What is the Gamma 5 Panel Cap made of and how do you clean it?
The body is one fabric: Aequora AirPermâ„¢ recycled nylon/spandex stretch plain weave, 138 gsm, 86% nylon and 14% elastane, finished with FC0 DWR. The cap also carries an anti-odour treatment based on Silvadurâ„¢, a biocidal product, which some buyers prefer to avoid. Care is deliberately restrictive. Surface clean only and line dry: do not machine wash, do not bleach, do not dry clean, do not iron and do not use fabric softener. Keep the brim flat as well. The brim is lightly structured, and folding or bending it in a packed bag can leave a crease it does not fully recover from.
What makes the Gamma 5 Panel Cap a more responsible choice?
The main fabric contains recycled nylon and is produced through processes that meet bluesign® criteria. The Gamma 5 Panel Cap is Fair Trade Certified and PFAS compliant, with a DWR finish free from intentionally added PFAS. Like other synthetic garments, the fabric may release plastic microfibres into the environment when it is washed - one more reason the surface-clean-only instruction is worth following.
