What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- Stretch softshell: 90% polyester, 10% elastane
- Brushed fleece in lining, collar and hand pockets
- Laminated shell with DWR against spray and wind
- No insulation: fleece lining only, not for deep cold
- Sailing jacket: no snow skirt or ski-pass pocket
- Made for spray and wind, not prolonged heavy rain
The Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 is a men's softshell jacket for coastal, inshore and offshore sailing. It is made from a laminated stretch softshell (90% polyester, 10% elastane) with a DWR treatment and a brushed-fleece lining. It shields you from spray and wind, adds some warmth and moves with you, and it looks just as at home in the city as onboard. It is not a ski-specific jacket.
Who is the Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 for?
The Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 suits sailors who want a stretchy, fleece-lined softshell jacket on deck. It also suits anyone who wants a technical jacket for everyday wear in town. It is not the right choice in these situations:
- as your only warm layer on cold days on the piste
- for freeride or deep-snow skiing
- for high-alpine use in exposed, stormy conditions
- for fast, high-output ski-touring ascents
It has no ski-specific features such as a snow skirt or a ski-pass pocket.
How weather-resistant is the Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0?
The shell of the Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 is a laminated softshell fabric that Helly Hansen describes as waterproof. It has a Durable Water Repellency (DWR) finish, a hydrophobic treatment that makes water bead on the surface. The protection is aimed at spray and wind. For sustained heavy rain or wet snowstorms, a fully seam-sealed hardshell is the better tool. Warmth comes from the brushed-fleece lining (100% polyester), not from insulation.
Which size of the Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 should I choose?
The Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 has a regular fit that Helly Hansen describes as a sleek cut. The stretch fabric gives you freedom of movement. Compare your body measurements with the Helly Hansen men's size chart on this product page before you order.
How is the Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 constructed?
The Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 pairs a laminated stretch outer fabric with a soft brushed-fleece inner. The laminated softshell is the barrier against wind and spray. The DWR treatment on the outside keeps water from soaking into the face fabric. The 10% elastane in the shell gives the men's softshell jacket its stretch. The fleece adds warmth where the jacket touches your body. The same soft fleece lines the inside of the collar and both hand pockets, which are the spots your neck and hands feel first on a cold, windy day.
How does the Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 work for sailing and city wear?
Helly Hansen designed the Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 for coastal, inshore and offshore sailing. On deck, the laminated softshell keeps spray and wind off you, and the stretch fabric lets you reach, pull and turn freely. Both hand pockets and the chest pocket close with secure YKK® zippers, so small items stay put when the boat heels. An internal hanging loop lets you hang the jacket up to dry below deck or at home. Ashore, the Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 looks as sharp in the city as it does onboard. It comes in two colourways, Ebony and Navy, with printed logos.
Is the Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 suitable for skiing?
The Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 is a sailing jacket, not a ski jacket. At most, it works as an outer layer on mild days on the piste. Because it is fleece-lined with no insulation, it is not a cold-weather ski jacket on its own. It has no snow skirt or ski-pass pocket, so it is not built for freeride or deep snow. It is also designed for sailing rather than uphill ventilation, which makes it a poor match for fast, high-output ski-touring ascents. For exposed, stormy high-alpine or mountaineering conditions, choose a fully seam-sealed hardshell.
What is the Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 made of, and how do I care for it?
The shell of the Helly Hansen Crew Softshell Jacket 2.0 is 90% polyester and 10% elastane, and the lining is 100% polyester. Follow these care steps:
- Close all zippers before washing.
- Wash the jacket with similar colours.
- Do not use fabric softener.
