What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

Product information
  • High adjustable waist as an alternative to bib pants
  • RECCO reflector plus beacon-specific pocket
  • 3-layer HELLY TECH Professional, fully seam sealed
  • Pure shell: no insulation, warmth needs base layers
  • High waist, not a bib: less torso snow protection
  • Venting only via zippers on the back of the thigh

The Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant is a women's uninsulated 3-layer shell ski pant with a HELLY TECH Professional membrane, built for off-piste, side-country, freeride and backcountry skiing. What sets it apart is the high, adjustable waist, which Helly Hansen offers as an alternative to bib pants, combined with a RECCO reflector and a beacon-specific pocket.

Who are the Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant ski pants for?

The Sogn Shell Pant is for women who ski off-piste, ride freeride lines or tour into the backcountry and want waterproof, windproof ski pants they can layer to suit the day. They also work for resort skiing and snowshoeing. They are not the right choice for cold, low-activity resort days without a warm layer underneath, because the pants have no insulation of their own. If you want chest and back coverage in deep powder, a bib pant protects more of your torso than this high-waist design.

How waterproof and breathable are the Sogn Shell Pant ski pants?

The Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant combines a 3-layer HELLY TECH Professional construction with fully sealed seams, YKK AquaGuard zippers and a DWR treatment on the 100% polyamide outer fabric. The membrane keeps snow, water and wind out while body moisture escapes through the fabric. When you climb or work hard, ventilation zippers on the back of the thigh release extra heat. The pants weigh 650 g.

Which size of the Sogn Shell Pant should I choose?

The Sogn Shell Pant has a high waist that you adjust with a fastener, belt loops for an extra belt and articulated knees for freedom of movement. Snow gaiters at each hem fit over your ski boots. Because this is a pure shell, all warmth comes from what you wear underneath. Choose your size with the size chart on this product page, and measure with the base layer and any insulating midlayer you plan to wear beneath the pants.

How is the Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant constructed?

The Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant is a hardshell ski pant built on a 3-layer construction with a HELLY TECH Professional membrane. In a 3-layer build, the membrane is laminated to the outer fabric and an inner layer, so the three layers work as one fabric. The outer fabric is 100% polyamide and carries a Durable Water Repellency (DWR) treatment that makes water bead off the surface. Every seam of the Sogn Shell Pant is sealed, and the YKK AquaGuard zippers are water-resistant, so the weak points of a pant are closed off as well. The Sogn Shell Pant contains no insulation. It is a pure shell: it blocks wind, snow and water, and your base layer and midlayer provide the warmth.

Is the Sogn Shell Pant suitable for off-piste skiing and ski touring?

The Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant is positioned for freeride, off-piste, side-country and backcountry skiing. For avalanche terrain it carries a RECCO reflector and has a beacon-specific pocket, so your transceiver sits in a dedicated place. A snow gaiter at each leg hem closes the gap over your ski boots in deep snow, and reinforcement fabric on the hem and lower leg adds protection where the pants take the most contact with boots and skis. Articulated knees support the bent-knee stance of skiing. On ski tours and skin tracks, zippers on the back of the thigh let you dump heat on the way up. A thigh pocket and cargo pockets hold small items, and a front fly with zipper closure completes the set. The Sogn Shell Pant also works for resort skiing and snowshoeing when you layer for the temperature. Where the pants stop: ventilation is limited to the back-thigh zippers, the high waist gives less torso protection in deep snow than bib pants, and the ski-specific feature set is not designed for technical climbing.

What is the Sogn Shell Pant made of and how do I care for it?

The shell of the Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant is 100% polyamide. Before washing, close all zippers and hook-and-loop fasteners so they do not damage the fabric. Do not soak the pants and do not use fabric softener, which can affect the performance of the membrane and the water-repellent finish. Wash dark colours separately. Tumble dry to reactivate the DWR treatment, and take the Sogn Shell Pant out of the dryer promptly. Do not iron on the printed HH logo.

Does the Sogn Shell Pant use bluesign materials?

Yes. The main material of the Helly Hansen Sogn Shell Pant is bluesign® certified.
