What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 260 g in size L, 110 g/m2 warm1 lofty fleece
- Thumb grips with integrated hand gaiters
- 100% recycled main fabric, GRS and bluesign
- No membrane: a shell is needed in rain or wind
- Collar only, no hood
- 110 g/m2 fleece: too light for standing still
The Norrøna falketind warm1 active Jacket is a men's lightweight fleece midlayer built for high-output mountain days: mountaineering, ski touring and trail running. The warm1 lofty fleece main fabric weighs 110 g/m2 and the complete jacket 260 grams in size L, so it moves heat and moisture away while you climb rather than insulating you at a standstill. Stretch side panels and a knitted grid fleece keep the bulk low enough to wear under a ski shell.
Who is this jacket for?
It suits the skier or alpinist who keeps moving — uphill on skins, on foot or running — and wants a light, fast-drying fleece that regulates temperature. It is not the jacket for static cold: lift queues, belay stances and long stops need more than a 110 g/m2 fleece. It is also not an outer layer in rain or wet snow, and anyone who wants a hood should look elsewhere, because the Norrøna falketind warm1 active Jacket has a collar only.
How warm and how breathable is the falketind warm1 active Jacket?
There is no fill insulation in this jacket. Warmth comes from the lofty structure of the warm1 fleece itself, 100% recycled polyester at 110 g/m2, supported by a knitted one-sided grid fleece of 92% recycled polyester and 8% elastane at 130 g/m2 in the stretch zones. Fleece is air-permeable, which is exactly why it breathes so well on the climb and exactly why it offers little wind protection. In wind or precipitation, put a shell over it.
Which size should you choose?
The Norrøna falketind warm1 active Jacket has a regular midlayer fit: close enough to work under a shell, cut with gusseted underarms and articulated sleeves so the hem stays down when you reach. Wear it over a base layer; it is not cut to take a thick second midlayer underneath. Compare your chest and sleeve measurements with the size chart on this page before ordering. Available in M, L and XL.
How is the Norrøna falketind warm1 active Jacket constructed?
The Norrøna falketind warm1 active Jacket is built from two fabrics rather than one. The body uses warm1 lofty fleece, 100% recycled polyester at 110 g/m2, which traps air in its pile for warmth at low weight. The side panels and high-movement zones use a lightweight knitted one-sided grid fleece, 92% recycled polyester and 8% elastane at 130 g/m2, which adds stretch and reduces bulk where a shell presses against the body. Gusseted underarms and articulated sleeves carry the movement, and the total comes to 260 grams in size L. A HeiQ Fresh FFL anti-odour treatment is applied to the fabric.
Is this fleece suitable for ski touring?
Yes, and that is the discipline it is aimed at along with mountaineering and trail running. On a skin track the falketind warm1 active Jacket works as the layer you keep on while climbing, with the chest pocket reachable under a harness or pack strap and the two floating mid-mounted hand pockets sitting clear of a hipbelt. The elastic cuffs with thumb grips and integrated hand gaiters hold the sleeves in place during transitions. Where it stops is weather and standstill: there is no membrane and no stated water repellency, so rain, wet snow and exposed wind require a shell on top. On a resort day it works as a midlayer under a ski shell, not as the jacket you stand around in.
What is the Norrøna falketind warm1 active Jacket made of, and how do you wash it?
Both fabrics are recycled polyester, with 8% elastane in the grid fleece for stretch. Polyester fleece dries quickly and keeps its shape through repeated use, which matters for a layer that gets sweated through and packed. Wash it gently at 40 degrees Celsius, inside out, with the zippers closed and with similar colours. Do not bleach, do not iron, do not dry clean, and do not tumble dry — air drying takes longer than the fabric's quick-dry behaviour in use might suggest, so plan the wash the evening before a trip.
What makes this jacket a more sustainable choice?
The main fabric is 100% recycled polyester and the second fabric 92% recycled polyester. The article is bluesign APPROVED, Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certified and certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, and the recycled polyester (PET) content is registered in the brand's sustainability data exchange. The jacket is made in China. It comes in two colourways: Deep Lichen Green and Caviar Black.
