More informationWhat Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

- 700 fill-power down recycled from old down
- 22 denier recycled nylon shell, matte finish
- One-hand hood adjustment, fits over a beanie
- No membrane: needs a shell in rain or wet snow
- Stitch-through quilting: cold lines at the seams
- Hood fits a beanie, not a ski or climbing helmet
The Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood is a women's hooded down jacket filled with 700 fill-power recycled down, built for cold-weather hiking, travel and everyday outdoor use. It is an insulating layer, not weather protection: the 22 denier recycled nylon shell carries no waterproof membrane, so a shell jacket goes over it when rain or wet snow arrives. Body-mapped insulation and synthetic panels under the arms keep the warmth where it is needed and the bulk down.
Who is the femund down700 Zip Hood for?
It suits a woman who wants one warm, light down jacket for cold hikes, travel, town wear, rest stops and après-ski, and who accepts pulling a shell over it when the weather turns. It is not the jacket for high-output uphill work such as ski touring, where down traps moisture and there are no pit zips or other vents. It is also not an outer layer for resort skiing or freeriding in falling snow, and the hood adjusts for a beanie rather than a helmet.
How warm is the Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood?
Warmth comes from 700 fill-power recycled down, reclaimed from old down products and distributed by body mapping rather than evenly across the jacket. The quilting is stitch-through, which keeps weight and bulk low but leaves cooler lines along the seams compared with box-wall baffles. Once the down is wet it loses loft, so keep it dry.
Which size should you choose?
The Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood has a regular fit and comes in S, M and L. The back is cut longer than the front for extra coverage, the hem is elasticated and adjustable, and the cuffs are stretch. Check the size chart on this page against your own measurements before ordering.
How is the Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood constructed?
The Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood uses 700 fill-power recycled down, reclaimed from old down products, held in stitch-through quilted chambers. Stitch-through means the outer and inner fabric are sewn together to form each chamber: light, slim and clean-looking, at the cost of cooler lines along the stitching compared with box-wall construction. The down is body mapped rather than spread evenly, and under the arms the down chambers give way to synthetic fabric panels. Articulated elbows let the sleeves follow your arms instead of riding up, and the insulated hood adjusts with one hand.
Is this down jacket suitable for hiking, skiing or ski touring?
For cold, dry hiking days the Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood works as the warm layer you pull on at the summit, at a rest stop or in camp, and it carries straight over into travel and town use. For skiing it is a mid-layer or an après-ski jacket, not a shell: there is no membrane, no stated water column and no taped seams, so falling or blowing snow and sustained rain call for a waterproof layer over the top. For ski touring and other high-output uphill efforts it is the wrong tool, because down holds moisture and the jacket has no ventilation openings. The hood is cut to fit over a beanie, not over a ski or climbing helmet, and the 22 denier face fabric is reinforced only under the arms, so rock, ski edges and a loaded harness will find it thin.
What is the femund down700 Zip Hood made of and how do you wash it?
The shell of the Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood is 100% recycled nylon in 22 denier with a matte finish, with synthetic fabric panels in the underarm area. The insulation is recycled 700 fill-power down, which contains non-textile parts of animal origin. Wash it gently at 40 °C with a mild liquid detergent, with all zippers closed and with similar colours, and skip the fabric softener. Tumble dry on a low setting together with a few tennis balls so the down clusters break up and regain their loft. Do not bleach, do not iron and do not dry clean.
What makes this a more responsible down jacket?
The down in the Norrøna femund down700 Zip Hood is recycled, recovered from old down products instead of newly sourced, and the face fabric is 100% recycled nylon. The article is certified to the Responsible Down Standard and the Global Recycled Standard, both from Textile Exchange, is bluesign® APPROVED and meets OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. The jacket is made in China. It belongs to the Norrøna femund line, the brand's everyday outdoor range.
