What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

The Norrøna femund pureUll Long Sleeve is a women's mid-weight merino base layer made from 100% pureUll merino wool, knitted as a single jersey at 165 g/m2 from 18.5 micron fibres. It is built to sit next to the skin all year round: under a mid layer and shell on ski days, and on its own as a plain long sleeve the rest of the time. The jersey is knitted with S+Z twisted yarn, which keeps the shape stable through repeated washing.

Who is this merino base layer for?

The femund pureUll Long Sleeve suits a woman who wants one merino top that covers both jobs: a ski base layer in winter and an everyday shirt in spring and autumn. It is not an outer layer. The fabric is an uncoated wool jersey with no membrane and no water-repellent finish, so wind, rain and falling snow go straight through it. If you want a base layer that dries as fast as possible after a hard skin track, a synthetic knit of similar weight will dry quicker than merino at 165 g/m2.

How warm is the Norrøna femund pureUll Long Sleeve?

At 165 g/m2 this is a mid-weight knit, which places it between a summer-weight merino tee and a true insulating mid layer. Worn alone it is a comfortable long sleeve for mild days; in cold conditions it needs a mid layer and a shell over it to keep you warm. The 18.5 micron fibre is fine enough to wear directly against the skin, and the back of the garment carries UPF 50+ sun protection for high-altitude and spring days.

Which size should you choose?

The Norrøna femund pureUll Long Sleeve has a regular fit with articulated sleeves, so it follows the body closely enough to layer cleanly under a mid layer without pulling at the cuffs when you reach up. Use the size chart on this page to compare your chest and waist measurements before ordering. The top is offered here in S, M and L.

What is pureUll and how is the fabric built?

pureUll is Norrøna's own 100% merino wool construction, and in the femund pureUll Long Sleeve it takes the form of a single jersey knit at 165 g/m2 using 18.5 micron fibres. The yarn is S+Z twisted, meaning the two twist directions are balanced against each other so the knit does not skew or bag out at the elbows and hem. Merino regulates temperature and moves moisture vapour away from the skin, and it holds body heat even when damp. Because there is no membrane, no coating and no synthetic facing, the whole garment is one material: wool, next to the skin, with nothing between.

Does the femund pureUll Long Sleeve work for skiing?

Yes, as the first layer in a three-part system. Under a fleece or insulated mid layer and a shell, the Norrøna femund pureUll Long Sleeve handles the sweat of a climb and keeps you from chilling on the descent, and the articulated sleeves follow your arms through pole plants and traverses. It also works for hiking, travel and everyday wear, which is the point of the femund line. Where it stops is clear: with no wind or water protection it cannot be the outside of your system, and on its own in cold weather it is not enough. Treat it as the layer everything else is built on, not as a stand-alone winter top.

How do you wash a 100% merino long sleeve?

The femund pureUll Long Sleeve is a single-material wool garment, so the care is specific. Wash it on a wool programme at 40°C, do not bleach, do not tumble dry, and do not dry clean. If you iron it, keep the iron at 110°C or below. Dry it flat and out of direct heat. Merino needs washing far less often than synthetics because it resists odour naturally, so in practice a thorough airing between uses does most of the work. If a hot machine wash and a tumble dryer are part of how you handle your kit, this is the wrong base layer for you.

How sustainable is the wool in this base layer?

The wool in the Norrøna femund pureUll Long Sleeve is certified to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), and the fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 and to GOTS Organic. The top is knitted and sewn in Europe, made in Lithuania. Being a single-material garment with no membrane, no laminate and no blended fibre, it is as simple as a technical layer gets, which also makes it straightforward to repair.
