A lined jacket contains a filling of down, wool or synthetic material.
What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 28,000 mm 3-layer GORE-TEX ePE, PFC free
- 220D Vectran at ankles and hem, 350 g/m2
- Full-length left side zip for dressing over boots
- No insulation: needs base and mid layers
- 816 g, heavy for weight-critical ski touring
- Offered in M and L only
The Norrøna tamok Gore-Tex Performance Shell Bibs are uninsulated three-layer shell bib trousers for men, built for powder riding in the backcountry and for storm days at the resort. The shell is a 3-layer GORE-TEX ePE-based, PFC-free fabric with a 28,000 mm water column, and the lower legs are reinforced with 220D Vectran at 350 g/m2. There is no insulation anywhere in the bib, so all the warmth comes from the layers you wear underneath.
Who are the tamok shell bibs for?
These Norrøna bibs suit the freeride skier or snowboarder who rides off-piste in bad weather and wants a durable, fully waterproof outer layer rather than a padded pant. They also work for resort and sidecountry days and for whiteout conditions where wind and wet snow are the main problem. They are not a stand-alone warm layer in deep cold, and at 816 g for the stated men's size they are not aimed at weight-critical ski touring or racing. As a fully taped three-layer shell with a high-rise bib front, they are a winter garment, not a warm-weather one.
How waterproof are the Norrøna tamok bibs?
The 200D face fabric weighs 152 g/m2 and is backed by a three-layer GORE-TEX ePE-based membrane rated at 28,000 mm. Every seam is taped with 13 mm GORE-TEX tape, and the thigh and ventilation zippers are water-resistant. Mesh-lined X-open side vents dump heat on long climbs or warm spring laps.
Which size should you choose?
The cut is regular to relaxed with articulated knees, a high-rise bib front and 38 mm adjustable stretch suspenders, so there is room for a base layer and a mid layer underneath. Integrated stretch snow gaiters and snap-button adjustment at the lower leg close the bibs over ski boots. This colourway is offered in M and L only; check the size chart on this page before ordering.
How is the Norrøna tamok shell bib constructed?
The Norrøna tamok Gore-Tex Performance Shell Bibs use a three-layer laminate: a 200D face of 100% recycled nylon at 152 g/m2, a GORE-TEX ePE-based membrane described as PFC free, and a bonded backer, so no separate lining is needed. All seams are sealed with 13 mm GORE-TEX tape, which is what turns the 28,000 mm membrane rating into a garment that keeps sitting in wet snow from reaching your base layer. A 4-way stretch panel in the back adds movement where a bib normally binds, and the knees are articulated. Total weight is 816 g for the stated men's size.
Are the tamok bibs suitable for freeride and ski touring?
Freeride is the discipline this bib was built for: deep snow, bad light, long exposure to wind and falling snow. The high-rise bib front covers the lower back and stomach when you are chest-deep, integrated stretch snow gaiters seal around ski boots, and 220D Vectran reinforcement inside the ankles and hem takes the edge hits that shred a plain shell. For skinning and sidecountry laps, the mesh-lined X-open side vents open wide, and the left ventilation zipper runs the full length so you can get in and out over boots. Where it stops is weight and heat: at 816 g this is a heavy bib next to a dedicated lightweight touring pant, and with no insulation it does nothing on its own when you are standing still in deep cold. Pair it with a warm mid layer for lift days.
What are the Norrøna tamok bibs made of and how durable are they?
The main fabric is a 3-layer 200D GORE-TEX ePE-based construction with a 100% recycled nylon face at 152 g/m2. The lower legs, inside ankles and hem carry 220D Vectran at 350 g/m2, a fabric chosen for abrasion resistance against ski edges, crampon points and rock. The back panel is a 4-way stretch fabric. Hardware is practical rather than decorative: water-resistant zippers on the two bellowed thigh pockets, two bib-front pockets, two horizontal chest pockets, an inside mesh phone pocket, a key pocket and an exterior hang loop.
What makes this bib a more sustainable choice?
The face fabric of the Norrøna tamok shell bib is 100% recycled nylon, and the GORE-TEX membrane is an ePE-based technology described as PFC free. Norrøna builds around durability and repairability, so a shell with Vectran-reinforced legs is intended to be used for many seasons rather than replaced.
