What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

The Peak Performance Freelight AOP Polartec® Alpha™ Hood is a men's hooded pullover midlayer built around 85 gsm Polartec® Alpha™ Direct active insulation. It is made to be worn over a base layer and under a shell, and its open-knit construction lets sweat escape while you keep moving. A seasonal all-over print gives it its look; the mechanism underneath is airflow, not trapped warmth.

Who is this midlayer for?

The Freelight AOP Polartec® Alpha™ Hood suits skiers and mountain users who move fast and sweat hard: uphill laps, ski touring, cold-weather hiking and hard piste days under a shell. It is not the right choice if you spend long periods standing still in the cold, such as lift queues or belaying, unless you add a shell or a warmer insulated layer on top. It is also not an outer layer: there is no membrane, no stated water column and no DWR treatment, so rain and wet snow are a job for your shell.

How warm and how breathable is the Freelight AOP Polartec® Alpha™ Hood?

Insulation is a single 85 gsm layer of Polartec® Alpha™ Direct open-knit fleece, with no heavier zones. That puts it in the light-warmth bracket: enough on its own while you are working, dependent on an outer layer once you slow down or the wind picks up. The same open knit that makes it air-permeable is what makes it breathe, so moisture moves out instead of collecting against your base layer. Narrow flatlock covering seams keep bulk off the shoulders and hips under a pack or a shell.

Which size should you choose?

The cut is relaxed, so this Peak Performance midlayer sits loose over a base layer and leaves room to move without pulling at the hem. Sizes run S to 2XL. Check the size chart on this page against a garment you already own; if you want a trim silhouette under a close-fitting shell, the relaxed cut will feel roomy and a slimmer midlayer is the better match.

How does Polartec® Alpha™ Direct work in this hoodie?

The Peak Performance Freelight AOP Polartec® Alpha™ Hood uses Polartec® Alpha™ Direct as the fabric itself rather than as a hidden fill. The 85 gsm open-knit fleece is lofted enough to hold warm air between the fibres, but loose enough to let water vapour and excess heat pass straight through. There is no lining and no face fabric over the insulation, which is why it reacts so quickly: warm within a minute of starting uphill, and vented almost as fast when you stop pushing. Narrow flatlock covering seams keep the join points flat so nothing rubs under a pack strap or a shell.

Is the Freelight AOP Polartec® Alpha™ Hood suitable for ski touring?

Yes, and that is the use it is built around. On the skin track this Peak Performance midlayer handles the output phase: you climb in it over a base layer, it moves the sweat, and the fixed hood with elastic binding adds a bit of cover under a helmet or on its own. On the descent it goes under a ski shell, where the 85 gsm Alpha™ Direct gives light, non-bulky warmth. Where it stops is clear. Alpha™ Direct is air-permeable by design, so exposed ridgelines and strong wind need a shell over the top, and a long transition in deep cold calls for more insulation than 85 gsm can give. Treat it as the engine-room layer, not as the garment that protects you from the weather.

What is it made of and how do you wash it?

The shell fabric is 78% recycled polyester and 22% polyester; the pockets are 100% polyester. Open-knit polyester is light and dries quickly, but it is a fabric that likes care: wash the Freelight AOP Polartec® Alpha™ Hood inside out in a laundry bag at 40°C, with the zips closed and with similar colours. Skip the fabric softener, because it coats the fibres and reduces the airflow the insulation depends on. Tumble dry on low or dry flat in the shade. Do not bleach, do not iron, and do not dry clean or professionally wet clean. The all-over print holds up better when the garment is washed inside out.

What are the sustainability details?

The shell of this Peak Performance midlayer contains 78% recycled polyester, and the garment is made without intentionally added PFAS.
