What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.

- Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 3/4 leg ends above the boot, no bunching
- Flatlock seams and no side seam on the leg
- Stretch knit wicks moisture and dries fast
- No insulation: warmth comes from layers over it
- Next-to-skin cut, no room for a relaxed fit
- Print placement varies, may differ from photos
The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns is a women's synthetic base-layer tight in 88% polyester and 12% elastane, cut to 3/4 length so the leg ends above the ski boot instead of bunching inside it. Flatlock seams and the absence of a side seam keep hard edges off the skin under ski pants. The knit stretches in all directions, wicks moisture away from the skin and dries quickly.
Who are the Spirit Short Johns for?
The Spirit Short Johns suit a skier who wants a close-fitting, quick-drying base-layer bottom for alpine skiing, ski touring and other high-output winter days. They are not a mid layer or an outer layer: there is no insulation, no membrane and no wind protection, so they are worn directly against the skin under ski pants. If you want a merino or wool base layer, or a relaxed cut with room to move, this is not the one. The same goes if you need coverage all the way down to the ankle.
How warm are the Spirit Short Johns?
Warmth comes from the layers worn over the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns, not from the tight itself. The 88% polyester, 12% elastane knit contains no insulation; its job is moisture management. It moves sweat off the skin and dries quickly, which is what keeps you from cooling down on the chairlift after a hard run or a climb.
Which size should you choose?
The Spirit Short Johns are cut next to skin, so they sit tight against the body with no spare fabric at the thigh or waist. Check your measurements against the size chart on this page before ordering. The garment runs from XS to XL, with XL offered in Frosty Haze only. The 3/4 leg is designed to stop above the ski boot cuff, so do not size up in the hope of a longer leg.
How are the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns built?
The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns are a single-layer stretch knit of 88% polyester and 12% elastane, constructed to sit quietly under a layer of ski pants. The seams are flatlock, so they lie flat instead of forming a ridge that rubs, and there is no side seam at all along the leg — the part of a tight that sits against the inside of a ski pant all day. The waistband is elastic and carries Peak Performance branding. Each garment is finished with a seasonal all-over print, applied individually, which means the pattern placement on your pair is unique and can differ from the product photographs.
Are the Spirit Short Johns suitable for ski touring?
Yes. The Spirit Short Johns base layer is built for alpine skiing first, with a 3/4 leg that ends above the boot cuff, but the same stretch and quick-drying knit works for ski touring and other high-output winter activities where you sweat on the way up and cool down at the top. Where it stops is clear: the lower leg is uncovered, so for anything that calls for full-length coverage down to the ankle a long tight is the better tool. And because the Spirit Short Johns carry no insulation and no wind protection, standing around in cold wind is only comfortable if the layers on top do that work.
What are the Spirit Short Johns made of and how do you wash them?
The fabric is 88% polyester with 12% elastane. Polyester is what gives the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns their fast drying behaviour, and the elastane is what lets the tight stretch with the knee and hip and then recover. It is a synthetic knit rather than a natural fibre, so if you are after wool against the skin this is a different kind of base layer. Wash it inside out at 30 °C on a delicate cycle with similar colours, skip the fabric softener, and take it out of the machine promptly. Tumble drying on low is fine, as is line drying in the shade. If you iron, keep the iron cool and stay off the print.
What is the sustainability story?
The Spirit Short Johns are made without intentionally added PFAS, the fluorinated chemistry normally used for water-repellent finishes. On a base layer there is no need for it, and Peak Performance leaves it out.
