What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.
Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.
Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.
Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.
Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?
-
Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.
-
Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.
-
Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.
Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.
Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

- You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
- Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
- After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. - Returns are at your own risk and expense.
- If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
- If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1. Check your items
√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired
√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?
√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?
2. Submit your return online
Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).
You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.
3. Pack your return
√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.
Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged
√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel
√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel
√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.
If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

- 3/4 leg ends above the boot: no bunching
- Flatlock seams and no side seam, no chafing
- Quick-drying 88% polyester / 12% elastane knit
- Synthetic knit: no wool odour resistance
- 3/4 length leaves the lower leg uncovered
- Next-to-skin cut: no room over another layer
The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns is a men's synthetic base layer bottom for skiing, cut to 3/4 length so the leg ends above the ski boot cuff. The knit is 88% polyester and 12% elastane, quick-drying and moisture-wicking, built with flatlock seams and no side seam. That construction is the whole idea: nothing bunches or rubs where a stiff boot shell presses against your calf.
Who is this base layer for?
It suits a skier who wants a thin, fast-drying bottom layer that stays out of the way inside ski boots: alpine days on the piste, ski touring, freeride. It is not for you if you want wool warmth or wool odour resistance, since this is a polyester and elastane knit. It is also not an outer layer and not a cold-weather insulating layer on its own.
How does the Spirit Short Johns handle sweat?
The knit is built to move moisture off the skin and dry quickly, which is what you want on a high-output skin track or a warm spring morning. The Peak Performance elastic waistband keeps it in place under a harness or bib, and the stretch fabric follows the leg through a deep turn. Treat it as a moisture layer rather than a warmth layer: on long lift queues in deep cold, plan a warmer layer over it.
Which size should you choose?
The Spirit Short Johns is cut next to skin, so it sits close to the body with no spare room to pull it over another garment. It comes in S, M, L and XL. Compare your measurements with the size chart on this page before ordering rather than adjusting a size by feel, and keep the close fit in mind: this layer is meant to be snug, not loose. The 3/4 leg stops above the boot, so pair it with long ski socks.
How is the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns constructed?
The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns is a single-layer knit of 88% polyester and 12% elastane, with no lining and no membrane. Construction does the work here: the seams are flatlock, so they lie flat against the skin instead of forming a ridge, and the leg is knitted without a side seam. On a base layer that sits under a boot cuff and a ski pant leg for six hours, those two details decide whether you notice the garment or forget it. The elastane content gives the four-way stretch that keeps the knit against the skin while you move, which is also what lets it pull moisture away. Indicative weight is around 200 grams.
Is the Spirit Short Johns suitable for ski touring?
Yes. The quick-drying synthetic knit is a sensible choice for high-output winter activity, where you sweat on the way up and then stop at the top. The same applies to freeride laps and ordinary piste days: this men's base layer bottom is designed around the ski boot, ending at 3/4 length so there is no fabric folding inside the shell. Where it stops is equally clear. The 3/4 leg leaves the lower leg uncovered, so it only makes sense with high boots or long socks. It offers no wind or water protection and is not meant to be worn as a stand-alone outer layer. For static days in severe cold, a thin next-to-skin knit is not the layer that keeps you warm on its own.
What are the materials and how do you wash it?
Polyester with elastane gives a smooth, stretchy surface that dries fast and holds its shape after repeated washes. The trade-off against a wool base layer is odour: a synthetic fibre carries no wool-based odour resistance, so on a multi-day trip expect to wash the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns more often. Washing is straightforward: 30 °C on a delicate cycle, inside out, with similar colours and without softener, which would coat the fibres and slow the drying. Take it out of the machine promptly, line dry in the shade or tumble dry on low. Do not iron the print.
What does Peak Performance say about chemicals?
The Spirit Short Johns is made without intentionally added PFAS.
