What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • 3/4 legs end above the ski boot cuff
  • Flatlock seams and no side seam on the leg
  • 190 g stretch knit, quick-drying after a climb
  • No insulation: not a warm layer on its own
  • 3/4 legs leave the lower calf bare
  • Offered in XS to L only

The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns is a women's synthetic base layer: 3/4 tights in an 88% polyester, 12% elastane stretch knit, cut to end above the ski boot cuff. Flatlock seams and a construction without a side seam keep hard edges away from the leg exactly where a boot shell and ski trousers press against it. At roughly 190 g, this is a thin, fast-moving first layer rather than a warm one.

Who are the Spirit Short Johns for?

They suit a skier who wants a close-fitting synthetic first layer that stays out of the way inside a ski boot and dries quickly after an active day. Alpine skiing is the main use, with ski touring and other high-output winter activity close behind, plus general winter layering under trousers. They are not an outer layer: there is no wind or water protection here. They are also not the choice if you want coverage down to the ankle, or if you expect warmth from the garment itself on a static, cold day.

How do the Spirit Short Johns handle sweat?

The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns are built around moisture-wicking, quick-drying polyester with 12% elastane for stretch, so the fabric moves with the leg and sheds moisture instead of holding it against the skin during a climb or a hard run. This is a synthetic knit rather than wool, so treat it as a layer you wash often rather than one you wear for days on end.

Which size should you choose?

The cut is next to skin, so the Spirit Short Johns sit tight against the leg with no surplus fabric to bunch inside a ski boot or under a shell trouser. Sizes run from XS to L. Check the size chart on this page and pick your usual base-layer size; if you are between two sizes, the elastane knit gives on both.

How are the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns constructed?

The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns are a single-layer stretch knit, not a laminated or insulated garment. The construction detail that matters is in the seams: they are flatlock stitched so the joins lie flat against the skin, and the leg is built without a side seam, which removes the one line of stitching that would otherwise run straight down the outside of the thigh and calf under a ski trouser. An elastic waistband with Peak Performance branding holds the tights in place. The 3/4 leg length is a deliberate choice for skiing - the knit stops above the boot cuff instead of folding into it.

Are the Spirit Short Johns suitable for ski touring?

Yes. Alpine skiing is the primary use for the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns, and ski touring and other high-output winter activity follow from the same properties: stretch for a long stride, a quick-drying synthetic face against the skin, and no bulk under a shell trouser. On the way up, the thin knit means less heat to shed; on the way down, the 3/4 length keeps the fabric clear of the boot cuff. Where this garment stops is clear: it carries no insulation, so for standing around at the bottom of a lift in deep cold you need a warmer layer over it, and it offers nothing against wind or water on its own.

What are the Spirit Short Johns made of and how do you wash them?

The fabric is 88% polyester with 12% elastane - a knit chosen for stretch recovery and fast drying rather than for warmth. Wash the Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, inside out and with similar colours, and skip the fabric softener: softener coats the fibres and slows down the moisture transport you bought the garment for. Take them out of the machine promptly, then either tumble dry on low or line dry in the shade. Ironing is possible on a cool setting, but never over the print. Do not bleach and do not dry clean; professional wet cleaning is only suitable under a very mild process.

What does Peak Performance say about sustainability here?

The Peak Performance Spirit Short Johns are made without intentionally added PFAS. That is straightforward for a next-to-skin layer, which needs no durable water repellent finish to do its job - the fabric works by moving moisture, not by resisting it.
