What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

Is your purchase not quite what you expected or is the size incorrect? No problem, you can easily return your order to us. You may try on and view an item as you would in a shop, but there are some rules.

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

Product information
  • HIPE® ACE membrane: 20,000 mm / 20,000 g/m²/24h
  • Three-layer laminate, every seam taped
  • Packable shell, made without PFAS
  • No insulation: warmth comes from your layers
  • One zippered chest pocket, no hand pockets
  • No pit zips, venting is the front zip only

The Peak Performance Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket is a lightweight three-layer waterproof shell jacket for men, built for hiking, cycling and general mountain use in rain and wind. It uses Peak Performance's own HIPE® ACE membrane rated 20,000 mm water column and 20,000 g/m²/24h, with fully seam sealed construction. What sets it apart is the combination: a full 20K/20K three-layer laminate in a 70D ripstop that still packs down to live in your pack all year.

Who is the Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket for?

This is for you if you walk or ride in changeable weather and want one light, packable shell rather than a ski-specific jacket. The Peak Performance Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket also works as an outer layer for ski touring and other human-powered winter days, and as straightforward rain protection in town. It is not a resort jacket: there is no powder skirt, no ski pass pocket and no wrist gaiters, and with no insulation it is not built for standing still in the cold.

How waterproof and breathable is it?

The HIPE® ACE membrane is rated 20,000 mm water column and 20,000 g/m²/24h moisture vapour transfer, in a three-layer construction with all seams taped. In practice that means sustained rain is handled, and moisture from walking uphill has somewhere to go. There are no pit zips, so the front zip with its YKK Vislon® slider is your only mechanical venting on warm, wet days.

Which size should you choose?

The Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket has a regular fit with raglan sleeves, leaving room for a base layer and a midlayer underneath without excess fabric. Check the size chart on this page against your chest and sleeve measurements before ordering. It is offered in M, L and XL, with XL in Ponderosa Pine only and Offwhite in M and L.

How is the Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket constructed?

Three layers are bonded into one fabric: a 70D ripstop face with a dry, paper-like hand, the HIPE® ACE membrane in the middle, and a soft tricot backer on the inside. Because the backer is laminated to the membrane, the Peak Performance Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket needs no separate lining — that is where the low weight and the packability come from. Every seam is sealed, so the 20,000 mm rating applies to the whole garment and not only to the panels. The fixed hood has a laminated brim that holds its shape in rain, with a hidden adjustment at the back so nothing dangles in your eyeline. A drawcord at the hem seals out wind-driven rain.

Is it suitable for hiking, cycling and ski touring?

Hiking and riding in wet, windy weather is what this shell jacket is for: raglan sleeves keep the shoulders free under a pack or on the bars, and the single zippered chest pocket stays reachable with a hip belt fastened. On a ski tour it does the job of the outer layer — waterproof, windproof, breathable — but it brings no ski-specific hardware and no warmth of its own, so your insulation has to sit underneath. For lift-served days in deep snow, a dedicated ski shell with a powder skirt is the better buy. Note that hand pockets are not part of this design; everyday items go in the chest pocket or in your pack.

What is it made of and how do you wash it?

The face fabric is 100% polyamide, the membrane 100% polyurethane and the backer 100% polyester. Machine wash the Peak Performance Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket at 40 °C on a delicate cycle, inside out, with all zippers closed and with similar colours. Use a technical detergent — it keeps the water-repellent treatment on the face fabric working, which is what makes rain bead instead of soaking into the ripstop. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Tumble dry on low or line dry in the shade, and if you iron, keep it cool and stay off any print. Do not dry clean and do not professionally wet clean.

What about sustainability?

This shell jacket is made without intentionally added PFAS.

3L
3L
3L refers to a three-layer construction in which the outer fabric, membrane, and a thin backer layer are combined into one unified layer. This design offers excellent protection against wind and water while maintaining high breathability. Because 3L is unlined, it feels light and flexible and functions as a versatile shell that allows your warmth and comfort to be determined by the layers you wear underneath. As a result, 3L provides a well-balanced combination of protection, freedom of movement, and comfort in winter conditions.
Peak Performance
Peak Performance began in 1986 in Åre, Sweden, where a group of ski enthusiasts decided to create ski clothing that was as stylish as it was functional. The brand is known for minimalist Scandinavian design and technical innovation. What once started as a local project is now a world leader in outdoor clothing, with products that combine sustainability and performance.
