What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

GOOD TO KNOW

  • You have 14 days from receipt of your order to register your return.
  • Are you too late? Then your order will no longer be found in the portal. In that case, always contact us first so we can see what possibilities there are.
  • After registering online, you then have 14 days to hand in your return at the post office. If you hand in the parcel after the 14 days, we will unfortunately no longer be able to process your return. The sooner you register and send in your return, the sooner it will be processed and you will receive your money back.
  • Almost all outerwear and trousers are delivered with a large yellow return label. Do not remove this until you decide to keep the item! Once this vignette has been removed, there is no way we can return the item.
  • Returns are at your own risk and expense.
  • If you return part of your order, we will only refund the amount of the returned items and not other costs such as shipping costs.
  • If you have received an incorrect or damaged item, please always contact us a.s.a.p. and include photos of the product and the labels so we can see which item/defect is concerned.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

Enter your own postcode and the full order number (including letters) in the portal to which you can start the return. You can choose to purchase a DPD shipping label via the portal. If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

Then pack the items back in their original packaging and put them in the shipping bag or box. Another bag or box is also fine, as long as it is sturdy so that it arrives undamaged

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

√ Stick the DPD shipping label on the parcel.

If you have chosen to send via another carrier, please write the return address on the parcel:

The Peak Performance Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket is a women's three-layer waterproof shell jacket built for hiking and mountain biking in wet, windy weather. It pairs a 20.000 mm water column with 20.000 g/m²/24h breathability in a packable 70D ripstop construction. There is no insulation in it at all: this is the protective outer layer of a layering system, not a warm jacket.

Who is the Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket for?

It suits you if you want one light, packable hardshell that lives in the pack and comes out when the weather turns, on foot or on two wheels, and as the outer shell over your own insulation on spring tours in the mountains. It is not a resort ski jacket: there is no powder skirt, no ski pass pocket and no pit zips, so deep-snow days and freeriding are better served by a dedicated ski shell. It also carries no RECCO® reflector.

How waterproof and breathable is it?

The HIPE® ACE membrane is rated 20.000 mm water column and 20.000 g/m²/24h moisture vapour transfer, and every seam is fully taped. In practice that means sustained rain and wind are kept out, while sweat vapour can move through during steady uphill effort. Ventilation comes from the membrane and the full-length YKK Vislon® front zip only, so on hard, warm climbs you will manage heat with the zip rather than with underarm vents.

Which size should you choose?

The Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket has a regular fit with raglan sleeves, leaving room for a base layer and a thin midlayer underneath without pulling across the shoulders. Check your chest and sleeve length against the Peak Performance size chart on this page before ordering. It comes in S, M and L.

How is the three-layer construction of this Peak Performance shell built?

The Peak Performance Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket is a laminate of three bonded layers. On the outside sits a 70D lightweight ripstop face fabric; in the middle the HIPE® ACE membrane, Peak Performance's own polyurethane membrane rated 20K/20K; on the inside a soft tricot backer that takes the place of a separate lining and sits directly against a base layer. Because the three layers are bonded into one fabric, the jacket stays thin and compresses down for packing. All seams are sealed with tape, so the 20.000 mm rating holds at the stitch lines as well as across the panels. The fixed hood has a laminated brim that holds its shape and keeps rain off your face, and it is adjusted with a hidden drawcord.

Is the Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket suitable for hiking, biking and ski touring?

Hiking and mountain biking in wet, windy weather are what this shell is made for: low weight, a packable build and a windproof membrane that works whether you are moving fast on a bike or walking a long approach. For spring mountain use and ski touring it works as the outer layer over your insulating layers, with the zippered chest pocket reachable under a pack hip belt and shoulder straps. Where it stops is resort skiing in cold, deep conditions and anywhere you need serious abrasion resistance: the 70D face fabric carries no reinforcement panels, so it is engineered around weight rather than around rock and ski-edge contact. With only one zippered chest pocket and no hand pockets, it also expects you to carry your gear in a pack.

What is it made of and how do you wash it?

The face fabric is 100% polyamide, the membrane 100% polyurethane and the backer 100% polyester, which makes the whole jacket a synthetic, quick-drying piece that tolerates regular washing. Wash it at 40°C on a delicate cycle, inside out, with all zippers closed and with similar colours. Use a technical detergent rather than a standard one: it cleans without clogging the membrane and maintains the water-repellent treatment on the face fabric. Skip fabric softener and bleach. Tumble dry on low or line dry in the shade, and reactivate the treatment with a low tumble cycle when water stops beading. Iron cool only, never over prints, and do not dry clean or professionally wet clean.

What about PFAS?

The Trail HIPE® 3L Shell Jacket is made without intentionally added PFAS, so the water-repellent finish on the outer fabric is achieved without that chemistry.

3L
3L
3L refers to a three-layer construction in which the outer fabric, membrane, and a thin backer layer are combined into one unified layer. This design offers excellent protection against wind and water while maintaining high breathability. Because 3L is unlined, it feels light and flexible and functions as a versatile shell that allows your warmth and comfort to be determined by the layers you wear underneath. As a result, 3L provides a well-balanced combination of protection, freedom of movement, and comfort in winter conditions.
Peak Performance
Peak Performance began in 1986 in Åre, Sweden, where a group of ski enthusiasts decided to create ski clothing that was as stylish as it was functional. The brand is known for minimalist Scandinavian design and technical innovation. What once started as a local project is now a world leader in outdoor clothing, with products that combine sustainability and performance.
