What Is an Insulated Ski Jacket and What Are the Options?
An insulated ski jacket is essential for anyone seeking warmth and comfort while skiing or snowboarding. The insulation helps maintain your body temperature, even in the harshest conditions. There are different types of insulation, each with its own advantages. In this guide, we explain the differences so you can make the perfect choice.

Down Insulation: Lightweight and Extremely Warm
A jacket insulated with down is the ideal choice for those looking for maximum warmth without sacrificing comfort. Down provides excellent insulation and is very lightweight, making it perfect for cold, dry conditions. However, keep in mind that down performs less well in wet conditions unless the jacket has been specially treated to resist moisture.

Wool Insulation: Natural and Breathable
Jackets with wool insulation offer a natural alternative. Wool is not only warm but also breathable and retains heat even when damp. This option is ideal for those who prefer natural materials and comfort in varying weather conditions.

Synthetic Insulation: Versatile and Low-Maintenance
Synthetic insulation, such as PrimaLoft or Thinsulate, offers excellent warmth and performs well in wet conditions. This option is often slightly heavier than down but dries quickly and is easier to care for. It’s ideal for active winter sports enthusiasts who value versatility and affordability.

Why Choose an Insulated Ski Jacket?

  • Optimal Warmth: Protect yourself against extreme cold.

  • Comfort During Activity: Maintain your freedom of movement without sacrificing insulation.

  • Suitable for Various Weather Conditions: Whether you're skiing in powder snow or braving a cold wind, an insulated jacket adapts to your needs.

Which Insulation Suits You Best?
The right insulation depends on your personal preferences and the conditions in which you’ll wear the jacket. Looking for ultimate warmth and comfort? Go for down. Need a versatile, low-maintenance option? Consider synthetic materials. Or choose wool for a natural feel.

Our premium ski jackets combine functionality, style, and top quality, so you can fully enjoy your winter sports adventure. Explore our collection and find your perfect insulated ski jacket!

STEP BY STEP GUIDE:

1. Check your items

√ Has the return period of 14 days after receipt not expired

√ Is the yellow return label (in the case of outerwear and trousers) and all price tags still attached?

√ Is the article unworn and therefore not dirty, damaged or creased?

2. Submit your return online

If you choose this option, print the shipping label. You can download this immediately and it will also be sent to you by e-mail (please check your e-mail address and any spam mail).

You can also choose another carrier outside the portal. We always advise you to send the parcel insured. The DPD label via the portal insures your parcel up to €500.

3. Pack your return

√ Fold the items neatly and close all zips and buttons. Because of the technical materials it is important not to cause serious creases and wrinkles, as these can damage the product.

√ If you have items from several orders that you wish to return, you may simply return them in 1 parcel

√ Put the enclosed packing slip/order confirmation (or a copy) in the parcel

The Mountain Studio Gore-Tex 2L Ripstop Ski Down Jacket (S-4 D) is a men's down-insulated ski jacket built for resort skiing in cold conditions. It pairs RDS-certified down at 700 fill power with a 2-layer GORE-TEX ePE membrane that is PFAS-free, so the waterproof shell and the warm layer are one garment instead of two. A helmet-compatible storm hood, snow skirt and fully taped seams come as standard, in the restrained silhouette this Swiss design house is built on.

Who is this ski jacket for?

The Gore-Tex 2L Ripstop Ski Down Jacket from The Mountain Studio suits the resort skier who gets cold on the chairlift on sub-zero mornings and wants one warm, fully featured jacket that also passes as a winter coat in town. It is not the jacket for ski touring or other high-output uphill days: the down is sewn in and can only be vented, not removed. It is also too warm for mild spring slush, and it is built on men's sizing only.

How warm is this down jacket?

Warmth comes from full-body RDS-certified down at 700 fill power, backed by an internal down collar that seals the gap at the neck. The manufacturer publishes no fill weight per zone and no garment weight, so warmth cannot be compared numerically with other down jackets. Regulation is handled by underarm ventilation zippers, since the insulation is fixed.

Which size should you choose?

The Gore-Tex 2L Ripstop Ski Down Jacket is cut as a regular ski fit with room for a technical midlayer or base layer underneath, and it runs over ski boots and under a helmet without fighting the hood. Sizes run XS to 2XL in men's sizing. Check the size chart on this page against your chest and height before ordering.

How is the Gore-Tex 2L Ripstop Ski Down Jacket built?

The Mountain Studio builds this ski jacket as a 2-layer construction: a 100% polyester mini-ripstop face fabric bonded to a GORE-TEX ePE membrane, with RDS-certified 700 fill power down held behind it. Every seam is fully taped and the zippers are waterproof, so the membrane's protection is not undone at the joins. The trade-off of a 2-layer insulated build is weight and breathability: it moves less moisture than a 3-layer shell using the same membrane, which is why the underarm ventilation zippers matter on warmer runs. The manufacturer publishes no water column in mm and no RET value for this jacket, so there is no number to compare against other shells.

Is it suitable for resort skiing, touring or town?

Resort skiing in cold conditions is what this jacket is for. The snow skirt keeps powder out on a fall, the storm hood clears a helmet, and the two large hand pockets stay usable with the snow skirt closed. Snowboarding at the resort works the same way. Off the hill, the clean lines and hidden detailing make the Gore-Tex 2L Ripstop Ski Down Jacket a straightforward winter coat for town and low-output cold-weather days. Where it stops: ski touring and any sustained uphill effort, because fixed down insulation cannot be shed; warm spring days; and prolonged rain above freezing, since down loses loft and insulating value once it is wet inside the shell.

What is it made of and how do you wash it?

The shell is 100% polyester mini-ripstop with the 2-layer GORE-TEX ePE membrane, chosen by The Mountain Studio for durability and repairability; a repair kit is included with the jacket. Insulation is RDS-certified down at 700 fill power. Wash the jacket at 40 °C or in cold water, inside out, separately and with all fasteners closed, using a mild detergent on a gentle cycle. Skip bleach, fabric softener and dry cleaning. A tumble dry on low helps the down regain loft after washing, and the care label always takes precedence.

What are the sustainability credentials?

The down in the Gore-Tex 2L Ripstop Ski Down Jacket is certified to the Responsible Down Standard, which covers animal welfare in the supply chain. The GORE-TEX ePE membrane is PFAS-free. The included repair kit and the mini-ripstop face fabric support keeping the jacket in use rather than replacing it.

Down (700 fill)
Down (700 fill)
Down with a 700 fill power delivers a high warmth-to-weight ratio. Fill power measures how much air the down traps, and therefore how much warmth it holds for its weight. At 700 the insulation stays light and highly compressible, so the garment packs down small and still lofts back up. This grade suits ultralight jackets worn on cold, dry days and works well as an insulating layer under a shell.
The Mountain Studio - Gore-Tex
The Mountain Studio - Gore-Tex
This part of the range pairs a two-layer GORE-TEX ePE membrane with a mini ripstop face fabric and down insulation. The result is a jacket that keeps the weather out with fully taped seams, yet reads as a winter coat rather than as technical kit. It is aimed at resort days and the hours around them, where warmth and a clean silhouette matter as much as the membrane.
