The Mountain Studio

The Mountain Studio was founded in Zermatt, surrounded by some of the most iconic mountains in the world, and its garments carry the line "Engineered in Switzerland". The brand makes a curated collection for advanced skiing, outdoor activities and everyday mountain life, built to move between the mountains and whatever comes after. Its idea is simple: buy better, use more. Rather than replacing trusted models, it refines them step by step through fabrics, details and colour palettes.

ALP-3 and GORE-TEX: two membrane principles

ALP-3 is The Mountain Studio's own membrane technology. It is hydrophilic, meaning it has no pores. It absorbs moisture vapour and moves it through the membrane at molecular level. It is built as a 3-layer stretch construction of nylon and spandex with a PFAS-free DWR on the outside. Depending on the fabric, it is rated at 20,000 or 30,000 mm water column and 20,000 or 30,000 g/m²/24h breathability.

GORE-TEX works the other way: it is microporous, with billions of pores smaller than a water drop but larger than a vapour molecule. GORE-TEX ePE is the newer, thin and lightweight generation, made without intentionally added PFAS. GORE-TEX Pro is the most rugged option for demanding mountain use, and GORE-TEX Pro fabric is rated at 28,000 mm. WINDSTOPPER by GORE-TEX LABS is completely windproof and highly breathable, but water-resistant rather than waterproof.

A 2-layer construction bonds the membrane to the outer fabric and adds a separate hanging liner. It feels softer and warmer, so you need fewer layers underneath, which suits resort and on-slope skiing. A 3-layer construction bonds the membrane between the outer fabric and a durable backer. It is the most rugged option, with the best water repellency and breathability, but you build warmth with layers. That makes it the choice for demanding use and extreme conditions.

Ski jackets

The jacket line runs from insulated resort jackets to light shells for touring and off-piste. The All Mountain Stretch Jacket (S-1) combines 3-layer ALP-3 stretch rated at 30,000 mm / 30,000 g/m²/24h with PrimaLoft Gold (60 g body, 40 g sleeves), a snow skirt, a helmet-compatible hood and YKK AquaGuard zippers. The ALP-3 Stretch 3L Insulated Jacket pairs the same 30,000/30,000 rating with PrimaLoft Gold Eco and taped seams. For backcountry days, the Gore-Tex Epe 3L Shell Jacket uses 3-layer GORE-TEX ePE with a flannel backer. The Alp 3 Light Shell Jacket is a 3-layer ALP-3 4-way stretch twill shell for touring.

Ski pants

The pants follow the same logic as the jackets. The 3L Carv Insulated Stretch Pant combines 3-layer ALP-3 rated at 30,000 mm with PrimaLoft Gold Eco and 600D Cordura scuff guards against ski edges and crampons. The W. 3L Stretch Insulated Pants offer 3-layer ALP-3 at 30,000 mm / 30,000 g/m²/24h, 600D Cordura and YKK AquaGuard zippers. For shell layering, there are the Gore-Tex Epe 3L Shell Pants with 600D Cordura and the Gore-Tex PRO 3L 150D Shell Pant in 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro. The 3L Hybrid Shell Bib Pant is a 3-layer ALP-3 bib.

Down, insulation and mid layers

All down used by The Mountain Studio is RDS-certified. Examples include the Windstopper By Gore-Tex Labs Reversible Down Jacket with 750 fill power down and the Ultralight Down Hood Jacket with 700 fill power down and a PFAS-free DWR. Down gives the best warmth for its weight and packs down small, which makes it ideal for very cold days. Synthetic insulation such as PrimaLoft Gold keeps you warm when wet and dries quickly, so it works better for high-output activity.

For mid layers, power stretch fleece like the Tech Fleece Hood or Light Tech Fleece Half Zip wicks moisture during intense activity. Technical wool, such as the W. Soft Wool Pile Jacket, stays warm when damp and is better suited to colder days.

Care

  • Wash shells on a gentle programme at low temperature with low spin, and rinse twice.
  • Use a small amount of technical liquid detergent. Never use powder, fabric softener, stain remover or bleach.
  • Hang dry or tumble dry gently. Once the garment is dry, give it another short tumble to reactivate the DWR.
  • When water no longer beads off, wash the garment and apply a PFAS-free spray-on DWR to the damp outer fabric.
  • Wash down garments on the gentlest programme with a special down detergent. Dry them slowly on low heat until completely dry, adding tennis or dryer balls to break up clumps.

Washing does not damage the membrane itself. Only the DWR wears off over time.

Frequently asked questions

Who is The Mountain Studio for?
The brand is for advanced skiers and anyone who spends real time in the mountains and wants garments that also work in everyday life.

Are the jackets and pants waterproof?
The shells and insulated ski jackets and pants with ALP-3 or GORE-TEX are waterproof. The lightweight down jackets, including the WINDSTOPPER model, and the fleece mid layers are not waterproof.

Should I choose 2-layer or 3-layer?
Choose 2-layer if you want softness and built-in warmth for resort skiing. Choose 3-layer if you need maximum ruggedness and breathability for demanding or off-piste use, and plan to layer underneath.

What does the brand do about PFAS and down?
The Mountain Studio has phased out PFAS from its product line and uses only PFAS-free water-repellent treatments. GORE-TEX ePE is made without intentionally added PFAS. All down is RDS-certified.
